Works exploring the inner and outer world: environmental issues, human symbols and the psyche

Hi! My name is Catherine Orr, I am a visual artist from South Africa, currently living in Lake Oswego, in the Pacific Northwest of North America.

I have moved around a lot in my life but I was lucky enough to spend a large part of my childhood living in the African Bushveld near the Kruger National Park and it has deeply affected my view on the world.

I studied painting and fine arts in Pretoria, South Africa and later I studied animation in Johannesburg. There I went on to teach Art for Animation; including art fundamentals, character design and storyboarding.

In my fine art work I most often paint in oils - on canvas or wood, I regularly use mixed media, such as metal leaf, copper, wax and stained glass. In my illustration work I prefer to work in traditional mediums; usually in graphite, watercolour, pastel pencils and gouache on paper or prepared board.

I create artworks in a range of subjects, including the natural world and our place in it, symbolism and the psyche.
